Rope Film Review

Rope Film Review

 (Fig1: Rope Poster)

Rope (1948) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock is a murder mystery movie starring John Dall as Brandon, Farley Granger as Phillip. The movie is set in an apartment where two college students Brandon and Phillip are exploring the Nietzschean philosophy which claims that murder is an art committed by the intellectual superior. To test the theory they strangle their friend David and puts him in an antique chest and use the chest as a dinner table  just before they are about to host a dinner party where David’s  father (Sir Cedric Hardwicke), aunt (Constance Collier), and fianc (Joan Chandler), and their former teacher Rupert Cadell (Jimmy Stewart) are invited. Throughout the whole movie Brandon the more sociopathic out of the two keeps dropping hints and bringing the topic murder up perhaps to test how far he can get without being caught where as Philip on the other hand looks like he is going to breakdown and tell the truth any minute. "Brandon, consistently calm and collected, experiences great stimulation in the result, and exudes a confidence and power over it that plays like ecstasy (he even lights up a cigarette as a celebratory gesture after the deed is done)."(David Keyes )

               (Fig 2: Movie Still)

As a master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock creates a lot of tense moment throughout the movie. One of the tensest moment occurs when the dinner party’s guest are having conversation at the background but the camera is focused on the maid clearing out the dinner table (as shown in Fig 2). The camera stays on the dinner table as the maid clears the table few item at a time leaving the viewer’s anxious about whether she is going to discover the dead body.

Over all Rope Is highly experimental movie with brilliant camera work when seen feels like the whole movie was shot in one take. "Hitchcock was interested in seeing whether he could find a cinematic equivalent to the play, which takes place in the actual length of time of the story. To do this, he decided to shoot it in what would appear to be one long, continuous "take," without cutaways or any other breaks in the action, though in fact there would have to be a disguised break every 10 minutes, which was as much film as the camera could contain."  (Vincent Canby) When the murder scene is being described the camera is slowly moved across the set which gives the viewers a sense of being in the apartment and seeing things through the characters point of view. (as shown in fig 3).

Story telling and commission Soundscape 8 Image 1 First draft

First draft of the image 1

For this image i wanted the sound to travel from outside to inside to a hollow space. I wanted it to sound really creepy so i used a lot of reverbs, echo, time and pitch stretching and flanger effects. I wanted it to feel like the sound starts from and outer space and goes inside where the creepy looking ticks travel to one place and starts feeding on some objects.

Here are the list of object that I used to create the sound.
Radiator- for the first sound.
Stir fry- bubbling background sound
Egg Shells- eating sound
Typing Keyboard -  ticks sound

More ideas

More ideas for the scripts
Character: Burglar
Prop: Catapult

Environment: Farmyard
So for the next set of story I wanted to try something different may be a crime story. On the last I was created a world inspired by the artist Fabergé who made sculpture using various precious metals I wanted to take some of the influences from the last project so I thought maybe the Catapult can be a sculpture made by a famous artist its made with the most expensive metals on earth and kept in a museum with security.
These are the others ideas that I came up with
Idea no 1: The written crime
A writer is writing a crime fantasy about a burglar stealing a the catapult from the museum. He starts with coming up with the plan to. Break into the museum. He goes to the museum where the golden catapult is kept to get inpriration for his story. He wonders around looking at the security around the museum. He starts thinking about lots of different plans and comes up with a brilliant plan he figures out how to get in and the escape route as well. He starts getting really excited about his idea the more he thinks about it and write about it the more he feels like its a crime he would be able to commit and get away with he feels like its the perfect plan. So he decides to do it he gets together a bunch of other burglar to commit the crime he also tries to find the safe place he picks an abandoned farm farmyard for the safe place. They manage to steal the catapult from the museum they are followed to the farmyard by the police they are sorrounden by the cops after they disappear into the farm. So the question is what happens in the farm yard do they get away with ?
Following the question from the first idea I came up with another idea
Idea no 2 : Abandoned Farm yard
It starts with the news about a group of burglar stealing the golden catapult and disapering with out a trace where did they go and what happens to the golden catapult. Slowly years pass by and years turns into decade but still no sign of the catapult burglar. Soon the invistagation is slowed down coming to a total stop until the year 2030 when a wealthy business man buys an abandoned farm yard located few 100 miles from the musuem to build a factory. After he buys the farm he gets a bulding crew in starts to take apart the farm they starts digging holes in the ground. On one day when the diggers are digging the hole they spot a really old object in like a treasure chest. They decide to break the chest when they open the chest they see a shinny object closer inspection they notice that it's the famous golden catapult. Everyone is amazed by the beauty of the sculpture How did it end up there they also finds a book stuck at the bottom of the chest it appears to be a journal from one of the burglar. Is the case of the catapult burglar finally getting solved does the journal contain all the answer to the questions??

Ideas for the scripts

Ideas for the story
Character- Burglar
Prop- catapult
Environment- Farm yard
After i got the character, props and the environment my first idea was to write a comedy story.
These are some of the ideas :
Idea 1 Comedy - Burglar trying to escape after stealing stuffs from farm but the only way he can escape is by using a catapult.
Idea 2 : Set in a village a burglar breaks into a farmyard. The Farm yard is surrounded by huge Fence and the Burglar tries to steal the farm animals by throwing them over the fence using a catapult.
I also had a chat with Vlad and he suggested that may be the burglar can be an animal like fox stealing stealing chicken eggs from the farmyard which helped be come up with a third idea.
Idea no 3: The Fox and the disappearing Chicken eggs
In a country side a farmer lives with his family. Every morning the farmer wakes up goes up to his chicken coop with his wife to get the eggs for their breakfast. And every morning when he opens the chicken coop there are plenty of eggs ready for him to take. But every night the cunning fox keeps stealing the eggs. few weeks later he realises that the number of eggs laid by the chicken are decreasing every week so he thinks that the chicken is getting old and buys a new chicken thinking he is gonna have more eggs. The fox returns in the night to steal more eggs and finds the new eggs since the eggs are fresh and from the new chicken he cannot control himself and he ends up eating all the eggs. The next morning he wakes up excited to see the work of his new chicken so he walks up to the coop to get the eggs but to his surprise he finds out that not even a single egg has been laid frustrated he starts looking around the area and finds eggs shells at the corner he also finds fox hair near the shell he suspects that a fox might be breaking into the coop so he builds a fence to keep the fox away from his chicken. In the night the fox returns to feed in some more eggs seeing his dinner protected by a huge fence. He tries breaking in but all his efforts goes to west. So he thinks for a while and comes up with a brilliant plan he builds a catapult to launch him into the farm. After couple of hours if hard work He manages to get into the farm and as soon as he gets in he starts eating the eggs he feeds on it like its his first time eating eggs on his entire life. After finishing his dinner and having a rest the fox decides to leave he gets out if the chicken. Coop he suddenly remembers about the fence he starts panicking he tries to get out of the fence but he fails at everything he tries after hours of trying he starts to get tired and falls asleep. The next morning the farmer wakes up and goes to the to collect the eggs with his wife when he gets there he finds all of his chicken eggs missing he looks around and finds out the fox passed out near the fence. The farmer gets his shotgun out ( bad-ass farmer mode on) then he looks at his wife and says looks like my darling is getting a new fur coat and shoots the fox .....
